Mark Gibson adds his third title in Terramar at the “EDGA Terramar Open for Wheelchair Golfers”, sponsored by The Mail Company

Mark Gibson has won the “EDGE-Terramar Open for Wheelchair Golfers”, reduced to a single session because of the incessant rain that has fallen on the Sitges (Barcelona) circuit since last night. The Northern Irishman has been proclaimed winner in both categories, Scratch and Handicap.

Gibson won the first two editions of the tournament in 2014 and 2015 and has re-conquered a third Terramar title by scoring 19 points on his card, one ahead of second-placed Richard Kluwen of the Netherlands. Sebas Lorente finished third with 12 points. Mark Gibson: “Yesterday I played very well, I had to do under par because Richard is a great competitor and Ihe did not make it easy. It has been a shame to end this way, especially because of the enormous effort they have made in Terramar, a club that has always made us feel at home.

The second day of the competition, which for the fourth consecutive year has brought together the best golfers in Europe in wheelchairs, has not been able to compete. At 8 o’clock in the morning, the route had already supported 15 liters per square meter and it has not stopped raining until 4 o’clock in the afternoon. Sebas Lorente, promoter of the tournament: “Yesterday was already a day complicated by the wind and rain but allowed us to finish the full lap; However, it has not stopped raining all night and the course was impracticable, the greens were soft and it was impossible to enter with paragolfers (wheelchairs specially designed to play golf) as they would have been damaged. The competition must have started at 11 and postponed departures by one hour but there was no solution, the test committee made the decision to cancel the second round as the forecast was much more rain until 4 pm.”

Pablo Larrazabal, ambassador of the tournament, has sent a message of support from China: “One more year, I have been very angry not to be able to accompany Sebas in the championship that he organizes for players in wheelchairs and of which I have the honor to be ambassador. As you know, it always coicides with my obligations in China, where I find myself competing, but at least I have been able to follow WhatsApp and Twitter. I really want to go personally to see how these cracks play and hope that some year the agendas fit“.

The EDGA-Terramar Open for Wheelchair Golfers has been sponsored by, among others, The Mail Company, the integrated services firm for buildings and business communities, for the first time in a row for the main sponsorship of the tournament.
